Motivational Interviewing: Conversations About Sexual Behavior and/or Substance Use
This 8-hour training (2 Friday afternoons) supports mental health clinicians in building confidence and skill when discussing sexual behavior and alcohol or other drug use with clients. Using Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a foundation, participants will learn practical, client-centered strategies for exploring ambivalence, assessing readiness for change, and supporting client-defined goals without judgment or coercion.
The training integrates harm reduction principles and addresses the impact of stigma, shame, and clinician bias on therapeutic engagement. Through brief lectures, case examples, and experiential practice, clinicians will strengthen their ability to navigate complex, value-sensitive conversations while maintaining ethical practice and a strong therapeutic alliance.
Designed for licensed and pre-licensed clinicians across a range of treatment settings.
